OVERVIEW

This six-hour class will cover the fundamentals of utilizing a tube magazine shotgun in a defensive situation. This class is not intended for students utilizing shotguns with detachable box magazines. Students will learn the following topics in the classroom and on the range:

  • Advantages and disadvantages of using a shotgun for personal defense. To include dispelling a few myths in the process.
  • Differences between pump and semi-auto shotguns including the advantages and disadvantages of each platform.
  • Methods of storing a shotgun for use in defensive scenarios.
  • How to identify and clear common malfunctions associated with pump action and semi-auto tube fed magazine shotguns.
  • Do’s and Don’ts for configuration of a defensive/tactical/social shotgun
  • Patterning your defensive load with your shotgun.
  • Managing ammunition when utilizing a shotgun to include various loading methods.
  • Ready positions, mounting and techniques for managing recoil when firing a shotgun
  • Movement techniques for defensive scenarios.
  • Effective shooting from non-shouldered positions.
  • Methods for engaging multiple threats.
  • Utilizing slugs for defensive scenarios.

WHAT TO BRING

Each student is required to bring the following to class:

  • A pump or semi-auto tube magazine-fed shotgun in 12 or 20 gauge.” Shockwave” style firearms are allowed in class with prior approval from instructor. To help with the learning of all students, please ensure you can perform the following basic operations of your shotgun prior to class.
    • Load
    • Unload
    • lock action open
    • engage and disengage safety
  • 100 rounds of buckshot (#4 or bigger)
  • 10 rounds of the ammunition student plan to use for their actual defensive load.
  • 10 rounds of slug.
  • A method to carry at least 20 rounds of buckshot ammo and 5 rounds of slug ammo for immediate use on your body. Slugs need to be carried in a manner that separates them from the buckshot. Side saddles on a shotgun can count towards number of rounds carried.
  • Personal Protective Equipment (Eyes/Ears).
